How
do you choose a web designer?

There
are many thousands of people who will offer to design and
manage a website for you. A lot of them are very competent
when dealing with website creation software, and can provide
you with a website that will look very impressive. They will
use animations, and other effects often using programs such
as Macromedia Flash or another program called "Swish".
They will create a website that will demonstrate their skills
when using the tools of their trade, and will include wonderful
gimmicks using javascript, popup windows or animated images.

Others
will try to impress to you with claims of the business that
they can bring your way by listing you on hundreds of search
engines, or will make claims about all of the associations
they belong to, or the web design awards they have won. Often
they will display these awards on their websites. Most of
these awards are meaningless, and the associations merely
names with little substance.

A
few, and only a few, will tell you what you need to know.
They will help you to understand just what a web presence
will mean to you and your business. They will advise you on
how to integrate your website with other marketing activities.
They will assist you in identifying the strengths of your
product and developing a strategy based upon that. They will
help in identifying your customers and targeting marketing
efforts towards them. They will also provide all of the facilities
and functions of the web designers mentioned above, but when
appropriate for the client, and not as a demonstration of
their skills. This is the WebSTAR Way.
